Just north of the Algarve, in the idyllic
hills of the lower Alentejo, lies Quinta do Barranca da
Estrada, better known perhaps as "Paradise in Portugal" - a
small 10 bedroom Guest Lodge at the edge of a serene lake as
its centerpiece.
Ever since the former Despatch Rider Frank McClintock and
his wife Daniela opened this blissful retreat over 25 years
ago, they’ve been committed to making it as environmentally
friendly as they can, and today over 90% of their Quinta is
powered by the sun.
Frank is a professional Birdwatching guide
and does more than his fair share in conserving the local
cork oak forests, the Montados, of southern Portugal, while
Daniela, trained as a masseuse as well as a cook of rare
ability, uses homegrown or locally sourced organic produce
in the gorgeous meals served on their beautiful vine-covered
terrace overlooking the lake.
The numerous dirt tracks and absence of
traffic provide the ultimate thrill for serious bikers. |
