You have just discovered the best kept secret in Glen Rose.
After a quarter of a century of abuse, the historic building
constructed in the 1920s was quietly transformed into an
absolutely charming boutique hotel. Although the new owner’s
chose to keep the original name Glen Hotel, it is anything but
your generic hotel. Character oozes out of every inch of this
wonderful property that operates similar to and has the feel
of a “bed & breakfast”.
Since its renovation just over a year ago,
guest after guest indicate sheer delight with their experience
at the hotel. This is evidenced by the larger number of repeat
visitors the hotel has welcomed in such a short time. Sondi
Albro, the hotels owner/inn keeper stated that “Our guests
obviously love the ambiance of the setting but seem to be
truly surprised by their ability to relax during their stay.
We are nothing like a typical chain hotel which tend to have a
sterile environment and noisy highway location. We don’t
accept walk-ins past around 10:00 PM at which time we lock the
doors as courtesy to our guests. Guests receive a personalized
door code that allows 24 hour access to the building. We do a
lot of little things that we don’t advertise that provide a
personal touch. By the end of a weekend, guests are usually on
a first name basis and tend to converse with us and each other
like they’re long time friends. Our quaintness and personal
service is something people don’t expect but seem to
appreciate”.
While the Glen Hotel is glad to accept
individual reservations, it is the perfect place to host small
group events such as reunions, wedding/receptions, retreats,
civic and business groups, etc. Mrs. Albro indicated the hotel
has already had a very broad range of group guests ranging
from women’s and couples retreats; team building workshops;
wedding receptions; and reunions. “We absolutely love the
diverse range of guests we’ve been able to enjoy. Reunions
have ranged from fraternities who play golf during the day and
socialize around poker tables at night to families who play
guitars and sing around the fireplace to playing dominoes and
watching family videos in our back lobby”.
Upon entering the front lobby you will feel
as if you’ve stepped back in time as you view the large rock
fireplace, ornamental ceiling with curved edges or the
glistening hardwood floors. This is the perfect spot to gather
in front of the fireplace to share a good bottle of wine or
just friendly conversation. The back lobby has a very warm
feeling with its slate floors, wood ceiling and soothing red
walls. This room is where guests tend to gather and features a
large television, leather furniture, and antique tables. The
guest rooms are equally as inviting and contain antique
furnishings and quality linens.
If you’ve never visited the historic
downtown area then you have never experienced the charm of
Glen Rose. The Glen Hotel is just off of the beautiful town
square which allows guests the unique opportunity to walk to
an assortment of gift shops, antique stores, restaurants,
pastry shops, museums, etc. Two very scenic parks along the
Paluxy River are also within a romantic walk from the hotel.
This location offers a good destination point on its own but
is also within minutes (less than five) to all of the areas
larger attractions such as Fossil Rim Wildlife Center,
Dinosaur State Park, Dino World, Brazos River and the Expo
Center.
A favorite discussion point and common
question from visitors and guests alike is whether or not the
building is haunted in some form or fashion. Mrs. Albro will
tell you yes and can tell story after story (not of the spooky
or scary variety) while her husband is a little more of a
skeptic. One such story involved a carpet installer who
suddenly left the building in haste in the middle of the
afternoon without saying a word. Several days later the man
returned with about six coworkers and admitted he left because
he was scared. Every time he set his hammer down to put
another tack strip in place it would disappear or be on the
other side of the room which spooked him. Similar stories
involving hair brushes, tooth paste, etc. have been reported
by guests. Mr. Albro, who tells the story of a university
professor visiting the hotel who assured him that spirits were
present but were welcoming to guests and very pleased with the
renovations, says tongue in cheek that “at least our ghost has
a sense of humor”.
Come experience a piece of history on your
next visit to Glen Rose. The Glen Hotel is the perfect place
for a quiet weekend or your next small group activity. It is
very moderately priced and offers discounts on group
reservations. Guests and visitors alike are always welcome!
